The Winnipeg Jets represent the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the NHL and are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Get ready for another exciting NHL season with the Winnipeg Jets by getting tickets from your guy at Gold Coast Tickets today!
The Jets joined the NHL in 1999 as the Atlanta Thrashers and last year relocated to Winnipeg as the Winnipeg Jets. They derived their name from Winnipeg’s original NHL team, which relocated in 1996 to Phoenix. The MTS Centre in downtown Winnipeg is home to the Jets and has a capacity of 15,000 for hockey games. Also, the Jets’ biggest rivalries have historically been shared with Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.
Entering their second season in Winnipeg, the Jets will look to improve from last season where they finished fourth in the Southeast Division and did not qualify for the playoffs. Evander Kane led his team in goals (30) while Blake Wheeler led in assists and points (47 and 64). Coming into the 2013 NHL season the Jets hope to achieve contender status in the Eastern Conference and with several significant transactions during the offseason, they are well on their way. The Jets signed goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who had an average GAA of 2.91 last season, to a long-term deal and veteran center Olli Jokinen to a 2-year deal. However the most important deal is still to come; the Jets will need to make a deal with Kane, who will become a restricted free agent this coming season, if they hope to retain some talent on their offense.
Thankfully, talent has been abundant in Winnipeg. Last year the Jets drafted the highly touted center Mark Scheifele, who scored 63 points in 47 games for the Barrie Colts OHL. Scheifele is clearly ready for the NHL and will join the roster in the fall, looking to become the Jets’ future #1 center.
