Virginia Tech Hokies (Football)

Expected to be in the top 25 all season long, the 2012 Hokies disappointed with a 6-6 record, barely extending their bowl streak to 20 consecutive seasons.  VA Tech had reeled off eight straight seasons of 10 or more wins before that.  Quarterback Logan Thomas took a step backward in his third season, but he returns to replicate 2011 form.  He’ll need help as he led the Hokies in rushing yards as well as passing yards.  Top receivers Marcus Davis, Dyrell Roberts, and Corey Fuller from last year are all gone, and none of VA Tech’s 10 four-star recruits are receivers, so someone like sophomore Demitri Knowles will have to step up.  The defense will get a big boost from the recruits, though, and the Hokies are still expected to contend for the Atlantic Division title.  Nine starters return on a defense that should get even better this year.  Remarkably, their regular season schedule does not include Clemson or Florida State, two of the hardest teams in the conference.  An opening week game against Alabama will be huge, though.  Virginia Tech’s football team is perhaps the pride of the athletic program and recognized nationally for its success.

The Virginia Tech Hokies football program is based in Blacksburg, Virginia at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  The Hokies play football at the NCAA Division I level and are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.  Since 1993, the Hokies have participated in the postseason every year giving them the third-longest streak in the country.  Current head coach Frank Beamer is the winningest active coach in Division I football and known for developing “Beamerball,” a football philosophy where the offensive, defensive, and special teams players all give an effort to put points on the scoreboard.  Lane Stadium, also dubbed the “Terrordome” in 1999, is home to the Hokies and one of the most feared home field advantages in the country.  With former-rival West Virginia now in the Big 12 Conference, the in-state rivalry between Virginia Tech and Virginia will undoubtedly heat up again during the 2013 season as VA Tech's biggest rivalry.
