Utah has now been in the Pac-12 for two seasons, and its fan base has gotten what it was craving, better competition, at the price of more losing. Last year Utah narrowly missed a bowl for the first time since 2002, going just 3-6 in the Pac-12. The defense was just fine, but the offense left plenty to be desired. But quarterback Travis Wilson enters this season as the undisputed starter, and he has shown flashes of greatness despite too many interceptions his freshman year. He needs help from his offensive line, though, which could destroy Wilson’s development if his first defensive instincts in the pocket distract too much from locating receivers. Utah’s top receivers, Dres Anderson, Jake Murphy, and Kenneth Scott all return, although leading the Utes in receiving isn’t saying much. Running back John White seemed to be flying solo too often last fall, recording over 1,000 yards rushing but at times the playbook became stale without a reliable backup option. With continued development from Wilson (thanks to a hopefully passable offensive line), the offense could function effectively. A bunch of defensive linemen join the team in this recruiting class, so the defensive could get better despite losing superstar Star Lotulelei to the NFL Draft.
The Utah Utes operate under head coach Kyle Whittingham at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, which holds just over 45,000 fans. Utah has no national titles but 24 conference titles and 17 bowl appearances. They have rivalries with BYU (the “Holy War”), Utah State (the “Battle of the Brothers”), and Colorado. Interestingly, Utah and Colorado didn’t play for 50 years until reunited in the Pac-12 in 2011, and they have split two games since then. The Utes have two BCS bowl game wins, and have the best bowl game winning percentage out of any team in college football that has 10 or more bowl game appearances.
