A storied, glory-filled past, consistently contending current team, and a typically excellent farm system building for the future make the Cardinals perhaps baseball’s model franchise. This year is no different than most for the Cards who are in the thick of the race in baseball’s toughest division, where St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh are all likely to make the postseason. But will the Cardinals have to appear in the dreaded Wild Card playoff game again? That question is serious motivation for the team, as if they needed any more. Yadier Molina was probably the leading candidate for NL MVP until his injury of late, but he’s still the heart and soul of this team.
Besides Molina, a quick glance at the lineup would have you believe it’s all about veteran power hitters Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran. But in reality it’s an up-and-down solid lineup of high contact rate hitters who spray balls all over the diamond. David Freese, Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, and Jon Jay live up to that reputation most significantly. So while they’re not hitting three home runs per game they are still leading the NL in runs scored through solid contact, walks, and hitting with runners in scoring position. It seems like every pitcher they call up begins his career with seven shutout innings. That Cardinals farm system is so deep, even the unheralded prospects are always Major League ready. Prospects Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller are just the latest to step up in the ridiculous Cardinals pitching staff. And by staying young, they’re staying cheap. Edward Mujica, Kelly, Trevor Rosenthal, and Seth Maness make up the sturdy bullpen. As always it’s a playoff atmosphere at Busch Stadium where 40,000 of some of the most loyal fans in the world file in each night. Gold Coast Tickets has the best selection on Cardinals tickets!
