The Red Storm entered the tournament with a one seed before they were upset by Robert Morris. That tournament, however, was not the NCAA Tournament but the NIT. St. John’s finished the 2013-2014 season with a 20-13 record. If the Red Storm are going to make the leap back into the NCAA tournament it will be because of the play of D’Angelo Harrison. The guard, entering his senior season, averaged 18 points a game last season. Shot blocker, Chris Obekpa, will also be returning to the St. John’s program after many thought he would depart. Head coach Steve Lavin will be tasked with guiding the Red Storm to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011.
The Red Storm play their home games at the beautiful Carnesecca Arena, and sometimes Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. Carnesecca Arena is named after the great St. John’s coach Lou Carnesecca. Lou coached the Red Storm, or formerly the Johnnies for over twenty seasons. He had a .725 winning percentage and was Big East regular season champion in 1980, 1983, 1985, 1988, and 1992 when he left the job for Brian Mahoney to take over.
