Despite a lack of a ‘football legacy’ in this program, South Carolina has put together some really good teams over the last few years, far better teams than they have ever had before. Running back Marcus Lattimore is now a San Francisco 49er, but his career will be remembered for both what was and what could have been. Injuries really limited his college career so much that his freshman year remains his best. And losing to LSU and Florida down the stretch took them out of national championship discussion. But Steve Spurrier’s crew will be back and strong in 2013. Capable Connor Shaw returns at quarterback, as do his top targets Ace Sanders and Bruce Ellington. But the running game behind Lattimore was weak last year and it probably will be again unless four-star recruit David Williams steps up. That staunch defense that actually won games for South Carolina gets five starters back, and its clear strength is on the defensive line. Lineman Jadeveon Clowney recorded 13 sacks last year. But the linebackers will be all new after the top five linebackers from last year are gone. Spurrier has challenges to face, but South Carolina football will still be successful and great to watch.
