2013: 73-89, 4th in NL East
The Phillies are giving it one last go around for a run at the division title with plenty of familiar names. Second baseman Chase Utley has been great and healthy this year, Jimmy Rollins has shown flashes of being the J-Roll of old, Carlos Ruiz has been an on-base machine at catcher, and Ryan Howard could be on his way to getting that feared power bat back. Mostly importantly he is healthy. Newcomer Marlon Byrd had to be their most productive hitter early in 2014 though. and guys at the back of the bullpen have been solid. Outfielder Dominic Brown had a breakout season last year and hopes to regain that power stroke.
Philly mainstays Ruiz, Howard, Utley, Rollins, and Cole Hamels represent the core of one of the most successful eras in Phillies history as they brought the World Series to Philadelphia twice, winning in 2008, and won five straight NL East division titles between 2007 and 2011. Ben Revere, A.J. Burnett, Jonathan Papelbon, Marlon Byrd Mike Adams, and Cliff Lee are mainstays from around the Major Leagues that the front office has added in an attempt to keep the winning tradition alive, and although this year it hasn’t gone as planned, the Phils still have a collection of big-name talent found nowhere else. And it’s always a packed house at Citizens Bank Park in South Philly, one of baseball’s great modern ‘retro’ parks.
