Oregon State has hit hard times of late and haven’t been a real threat to the Pac-12 in about two generations. The 2012 team won 21 games, the most since the 1990 team won 22. Guess when they last made the NCAA Tournament? Yep. But last year the Beavers were actually pretty entertaining to watch as one of the higher-scoring teams in the Pac-12. They had some exciting wins, like back-to-back home wins against USC and UCLA and beating down rival Oregon. But the struggles for this season can be expected when you realize their three top scorers graduated, the fourth top scorer left early for the NBA, and scorer #5, a promising freshman guard, transferred to Iowa State. This winter is up in the air but it’s hard to see the team getting better.
The Oregon State Beavers operate under coach Wayne Tinkle at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon. Last year’s 16-16 team was the highest-scoring in quite a while but lackluster defense prevented the first trip to the Big Dance in over two decades. The 1990 appearance was the third of three consecutive one-and-dones. The star of that team was Gary Payton, one of 24 NBA players that have come from Oregon State. Payton is the most notable, but AC Green, Brent Barry, and Jared Cunningham are among the others. Cunningham is the only active NBA player who was a Beaver.
