The 2012-13 basketball squad at Northwestern got off to a great 6-0 start behind seniors Reggie Hearn and Drew Crawford. The season took a hit, however, when the team lost Crawford for the season-ending surgery on December 14 to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. While it was a disappointing season with a final record of 13-19 (4-14 in the Big Ten), the Wildcats still put together impressive stretches of play while going up against some of the toughest competition in the country. Northwestern played the 15th hardest schedule in the nation by SOS (Strength of Schedule) and still managed to knock off Big Ten rivals Penn State and Illinois on the road, overwhelm Purdue and Minnesota at home, and even outsmart Brown University with a 63-42 win on December 23. The 2013-14 season begins with new coach Chris Collins, a longtime assistant at Duke, and will see the new addition of forward Nate Taphorn, with two more recruits still considering Northwestern. This season will also see the continued emergence of guards Tre Demps and Drew Sobolewski, both entering their junior year. Collins’ fresh coaching scheme could help Northwestern finally reach their goal of making the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.
