2013 Record: 8-8
Although sometimes the laughing stock of the league, Rex Ryan pulled off perhaps his best coaching job yet in 2013. The Jets finished the year 8-8 even with extremely inconsistent play from their rookie QB Geno Smith. Smith showed flashes throughout the year that he could be a promising player but finished the year with 3,046 yards 12 TDs and 21 INTs Trading off wins and losses for the first ten weeks of the year, the Jets defense was the reason the they were able to finish the year .500. It was a defense that included defensive rookie of the year Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson (10.5 Sacks). Richardson will be a building block for the future and could be one of the best defensive tackles in the league for years to come.
New acquisitions in the offseason included WR Eric Decker, QB Michael Vick, and RB Chris Johnson. Vick and Johnson, both passed their prime, will bring some experience to a young Jets team. Decker, a pro bowler, will provide whoever starts at quarterback with a big time target to hit.
The Jets added safety Calvin Pryor (Louisville), in the first round of the draft, to an already outstanding defense. Although there are many unanswered questions, mostly on the offensive side of the ball, a potential playoff run is not out of the question. Look for the Jets to be right in the thick of things in the competitive AFC East. Will it be Michael Vick or Geno Smith come week one?
