New Orleans Pelicans

2013 Result: 27-55, missed playoffs

So there are no lakes in Los Angeles and little jazz in Utah compared to New Orleans.  Are there Hornets in New Orleans?  Apparently not, as owner Tom Benson pulled off a franchise rebranding rarely seen in the NBA.  The Pelican, the state bird of Louisiana, is now their icon.  If there was ever a time to rebrand, it’s now as the Hornets have been pretty bad the last two years without Chris Paul and play to an arena with far too many empty seats.  Needing a spark, the Pelicans traded the 6th overall pick, Nerlens Noel, to Philly for Jrue Holiday and 42nd overall pick Pierre Jackson.  A dormant offense was a big problem for the Pelicans last year and they don’t want that to happen again with that acquisition and acquiring Tyreke Evans from Sacramento.  Evans, Holiday, Eric Gordon, and Austin Rivers represent one of the deepest groups of guards in the league.  There is still a definite hole at center on the roster as the only centers as of this writing were Greg Stiemsma and Jeff Withey, but they have a tremendous power forward duo in Ryan Anderson (16.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG) and last year’s #1 pick Anthony Davis (13.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG).  Davis should get even more playing time in his second season.  While the Pelicans are very strong in some positions, like guard and power forward, and not so much at others, like center and small forward with Al-Farouq Aminu, they are virtually guaranteed to be better than last year’s team.  With a name name, logos, uniforms, and players, maybe new fans will show up too.

The New Orleans Pelicans represent the city of New Orleans, Louisiana in the Southwest Division and Western Conference of the NBA.  The Pelicans were founded during the 1988–89 NBA season as the Charlotte Hornets and would stay in Charlotte for 14 seasons before relocating to New Orleans.  During their early seasons they struggled and have tried to find stability in recent years.  During the New Orleans years their biggest star has been Chris Paul who led them to new heights in the mid-to-late 2000s.  Though they have yet to claim a NBA title, they last won their division in 2008.
