New Kids on the Block was formed in the mid-1980s by Maurice Starr, who set the group up with a recording contract at Columbia Records. Their first album, New Kids on the Block (1986), was mostly written by Starr and featured a lot of 80s bubblegum-pop material. It was a real failure, failing to gain attention in or out of their home Boston market. The second album was also bound for failure and the group was nearly cut by Columbia until one radio station in Florida started playing the first song, and reaction was very positive. Once one of their videos started appearing on MTV, they gained a ton of popularity. They quickly became one of the hottest boy bands ever, paving the way for The Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, and others. Despite breaking up in 1995, the group reunited in 2007and has gone on reunion tours since. Their latest album, 10, was released on April 2 and this current tour promotes it.
