2013 Record: 12-4
As long as Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are around the Patriots are going to be a factor. This much was true once again in 2013. The Patriots stumbled a bit early on but closed the year winning five out of their last six to secure a first round bye. It would be the fifth year in a row the mighty Patriots won the AFC East. By Patriots standards, however, it was an up and down year. Injuries hampered them throughout the 2013 campaign. Tight end Rob Gronkowski suffered another season ending injury and receiver Danny Ammendola, brought in to replace Wes Welker, just could not stay on the field. It was little known Julian Edelman who stepped up to become Tom Brady’s most reliable target (105 catches, 1,056 yards, 6 TDs). Led by Brady, Edelman, and a trio of running backs the Patriots advanced to their third straight AFC title game. The Peyton Manning led Broncos were just too much for the Patriots and the season ended on a sour note.
Most teams would be happy with three trips in a row to the conference title game but not the Patriots. They went out and added big name cornerback Darrelle Revis to an already stingy defense. It is also vital that Gronkowski avoid another long term injury. The big tight end is by far Tom Brady’s favorite and most reliable target downfield. Former Carolina Panther Brandon Lafell also joined the Patriots offense this offseason. Some say Tom Brady lost a step last year and some say there is nothing to worry about.
