It’s almost a shock when the Spartans season doesn’t end with run to the Final Four. When the Spartans fell to the eventual National Champion UConn Huskies in the Elite 8, many people around college basketball were shocked. The loss also marked the first time in head coach Tom Izzo’s career that a senior class had failed to advance to a Final Four. The 2013-2014 Spartans were incredibly talented and Coach Izzo will have a lot to replace looking ahead to the 2014-2015 campaign. Standouts Gary Harris and Adreian Payne were both first round selections in this past year’s draft. Michigan State is not unfamiliar territory, however. There are no rebuilding years for a program of their reputation. Look for the next cycle of seniors to get back into Final Four glory!
The Spartans have enjoyed remarkable consistency in coaching. Over the last 37 years they have had just two coaches, Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo. Heathcote coached Magic Johnson’s 1979 Spartans to the national championship, and Izzo led Jason Richardson’s 2000 Spartans to another national title. The Spartans have made the NCAA Tournament 28 times in their history including the two national titles and 16 consecutive appearances. They have become one of the country’s most consistent powerhouses year in and year out, making ten Sweet 16 appearances in the last 14 years. Don’t miss the Spartans 2014-15 basketball season!
