Football has again taken a downturn in Lexington, where Kentucky isn’t really known for football prowess. But a five-year bowl streak between 2006 and 2010 showed the Wildcats can have consistent success, and that’s where new coach Mark Stoops wants to be. Last year was forgettable for Kentucky, as they went 2-10 (0-for-SEC) for their worst season since 1994. The offense was 119th in the country, defense 87th. Four guys got significant playing time at quarterback, the most effective of which was Maxwell Smith who should return to start. Raymond Sanders was good at running back and he returns. Defensively, there was just no pressure and no big play potential, as Kentucky forced just eight turnovers. Stoops, a longtime defensive coach, should help there. He certainly won’t allow it to get any worse. The Wildcats have a solid recruiting class (six four-star recruits), but it’s still miles behind their SEC competition, and that’s just a tough conference to be in for a rebuilding effort. Still, that bowl streak gives definite hope for the future. Keep an eye on Kentucky—or better yet, see the Wildcats live with Gold Coast Tickets!
