2013-2014: 20-15 (7-11 Big Ten)
It was another up and down year for the Fighting Illini in the 2013-2014 season. John Groce took Illinois to the NCAA tournament in his first year with the school but was unable to do so this past year. A mid season eight game losing streak was too much for the Fighting Illini to overcome and their season ended in the second round of the NIT tournament with a loss to Clemson. However, there were plenty of positives to take from the year. Drake transfer Rayvonte Rice emerged as the team’s best player and one of the best scores in the conference (16 ppg). He will be returning for his senior season. Looking towards the 2014-2015 season, Illinois will be returning most of the key contributors from last year’s team. Chicago kids, Tracy Abrams (Mount Carmel) and Kendrick Nunn (Simeon) will have to be key figures if Illinois wants to get back into the tournament. It’s shaping up to be a good year in Campaign. The Illinois Fighting Illini operate under Coach John Groce at the State Farm Center (formerly Assembly Hall) in Champaign. Their best season was in 2005, when Deron Williams, Luther Head, Dee Brown, and more led the Illini to the National Championship Game only to lose to North Carolina. That remains their only appearance in the title game although they have made the Final Four five times and the NCAA Tournament 30 times. 40 Illini have made the NBA although the only two currently are Williams, the three-time All-Star point guard of the Brooklyn Nets, and Meyers Leonard, big man on the Portland Trailblazers. Other notable alums include Brian Cook, Head, Brown, former-Bull Kendall Gill, Nick Anderson, Derek Harper, and Eddie Johnson. Illini B-ball could get even better with this great recruiting class, and the team always benefits from their notable home-court advantage at the State Farm Center.
