The Gipsy Kings are a group of southern French musicians who perform in Spanish with an Andalusian accent (coming from the southern Spanish region of Andalucia). They were originally known as Los Reyes (which means The Kings) and are credited with bringing rumba catalana, a type of pop that came from flamenco music, to mainstream. Los Reyes began as a gypsy band, traveling around France playing at weddings, festivals, and in public places. They weren’t really a famous band until they met producer Claude Martinez who saw their potential. Their self-titled debut album was released in the US in 1989 and spent 40 weeks on the charts which is rare for a non-English album here. The Reyes name makes sense considering five band members are a part of the Reyes family: Nicolas, Paul, Francois, Patchai, and Andre. Other guitarists include Diego, Paco, and Tonino Baliardo.
