This playoff PGA event decides who gets into the season-ending Tour Championship, which decides the Fed-Ex Cup winner. As a result this championship generally draws the famous-household names such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and current Fed-Ex Cup winner Jim Furyk. During the Pro-Am local Chicago celebrities and athletes, such as Michael Jordan, can be seen playing with the PGA players. The event, which was called the Western Open, started in 1899. Past champions include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. Although the tournament has been played in various spots around the Chicagoland area since 1960, Cog Hill now houses this vital tournament in the PGA schedule.
