The best match-up of the 2011 NCAA Division 1A football regular season will be repeating in the upcoming BCS National Championship game. #1 LSU Tigers and #2 Alabama Crimson Tide first met in their week 9 SEC divisional match-up where the Tigers handed the Tide their only loss of the season with an overtime game winning field goal to go up 9-6. Both teams finished the regular season strong, LSU going 13-0 and becoming the SEC champs while Bama rolled to an 11-1 finish. Although an argument can be made that a very talent Oklahoma State team deserved a spot in the title game, it’s clear these are the two best college football teams in the nation.
Led by Coach Les Miles, the undefeated LSU Tigers are averaging 38.5 points per game (12th) while only letting up an average of 10.5 points a game (2nd). The Tigers’ defense is led by Heisman candidate Tyrann “The Honey Badger” Mathieu. The sophomore has racked up 71 tackles, 5 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions while dominating the corner position this year and has also been a threat as a punt returner. The only team that let’s up less points per game than is Alabama’s defense giving up a mere 8.8 points per game and even though their D is the nation’s best their biggest threat resides on offense. Also a Heisman candidate, junior running back Trent Richardson has been a human highlight reel this season, rushing for 1583 yards and 20 touchdowns and being on the receiving end of 3 passing touchdowns as well. With such dominance on both side of the ball for each team this truly might be one of the best championship match-ups of all time.
